Our sweet beautiful mother, Dorothy Mae Mackey (nee Scroggins), age 90, died peacfully on Friday, January 5th, 2018 surrounded by family and friends after courageously living with Alzheimer’s disease. She is now reunited with the love of her life, Gilbert D Mackey (married 48 years) who preceeded her in death on October 26, 2017. Dorothy was born in Waukegan, IL on October 24, 1927 to Pauline and Milton Scroggins. She lived most of her life in Lake County, IL. A move to Florida in 1999 with Gil, allowed year round golf and an escape from winter weather. They moved back to IL in 2012 to be near family and friends and became members of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church where they developed wonderful supportive friendships.
Dorothy lived a very active life, with her husband, Gil, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren always her number one focus. She worked as a dental assistant for Gil for several years, and also as a realtor, while the main focus of her life was as a mother, wife and homemaker. Dorothy was president of several organizations including PTA and Women’s Golf Auxilliary and she volunteered with the veterans at the Community Affairs Service Program for twelve years.
Dorothy and Gil enjoyed traveling and playing golf, both active members at Glen Flora Country Club for many years. Dorothy made a hole-in-one when she was 68 years old! She was loving, sweet, always thinking of others and enjoyed entertaining and spending time with family and friends. Our Dorothy was gifted with a beautiful voice and she could be heard singing while driving and doing housework and at the most spontaneous times. The world was made more beautiful by her presence, her ever-present smile and her songs.
Her life with Gil was a true love story. Life became more challenging their last years as Dorothy’s Alzheimer’s dementia progressed. Gil and her devoted daugher, Diana, cared for her with gentle loving care, displaying such patience and love for her, going out of their way to provide her with special moments and excursions to make the most of the Now. Through the decline of her illness she remained as loving as she had always been, maintaining her sweet spark of connection with others. Her eyes lit up in response to any kind face or loving hug and she still delighted in singing even in her last days. We are eternally grateful for the gentle and loving care of her extraordinary caregivers Goshia, Tahnee, Marlene and Jenny and the loving caregivers at the Sunrise Memory Care unit. They are angels on earth.
We all have happy memories of the 80th surprise birthday party that Gil excitedly planned for Dorothy, including all of her siblings and all of their combined children at Disney World in Florida. It was a glorious surprise!
Dorothy was preceded in death by her precious husband, Gilbert D Mackey; her daughter, Patricia “Patty” Buirge; her granddaughter, Kari Sehl; her sister, Joanne Stenerson; and her son-in-law, Glenn Nettesheim.
Her spirit is carried on in the hearts of their children Diana Nettesheim, Jacqueline (Michael) Wells, Richard Crater, Susan (Ron) Mackey, Karen (Ron) Seveska, Janet (Michael) Driscoll, Gerald (Lisa) Mackey; many, many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; siblings Richard “Dick” (Theresa) Scroggins, Dolores Nelson, Louise Niemi, Milton “Bud” (Roberta) Scroggins, Jack (Barbara) Scroggins; and sister-in-law Rhea;
