Antonio Merucci “Tony” age 86 of Highwood passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2020 at home surrounded by his family. He was born September 23, 1933 in Sant’ Elia, Froisone, Italy to the union of Silvestro and Maria (Fragnoli) Merucci. He immigrated to the United States to Detroit, Michigan in 1956 then moved to Highwood where he met his future wife Josephine Bernardi. They were married on June 25, 1960 at St. James Church, Highwood and started their family. Tony retired from New Trier High School, Winnetka after 33 years in maintenance. He was a member of St. James Church, Highwood, Highwood Bocce Ball Club, Highland Park Elks Club and the former Giovanni Italia Club. Tony had a green thumb, and enjoyed growing not only a beautiful garden but beautiful grandchildren, too.
Beloved husband of 59 years to Josephine. Loving father of Silvano (Mary Beth) Merucci of Kensoha and Maryann (Jay) Craig of Braselton, Georgia. Fond Nonno of Michael Merucci of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Mark Merucci of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, Lindsey Craig of Chicago and Alyssa Craig of Kennesaw, Georgia. Dear brother of Francisco (late Angela) Merucci of Sant’ Elia, Italy, late Gaetana (late Antonio) Tedesco, late Rafaello (Marilisa) Merucci. Fond Zio to many.
Friends may visit on Monday, May 11, 2020 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, wake service 11:00 AM officiating Rev. Vincent Costello, celebrant. with interment following at Ascension Cemetery, Libertyville.
