E. Daniel Joseph Flynn, Sergeant Major, U. S. Marine Corps Retired, age 78 of Buffalo Grove, Illinois passed away on Wednesday, March 1, 2017. He was born November 15, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois to the union of Edward Daniel Flynn and Fannie Bella Kahn.
Daniel Flynn took his opportunity in 1956 at the age of 17, when he enlisted in the 9th Infantry Battalion, U. S. Marine Corps Reserve in Chicago. In the years between his first enlistment and his retirement in 1989, the Sergeant Major served in capacities in both the ground and aviation forces, including service as a rifleman, machine gunner, squad leader, platoon sergeant, communicator, technician, training NCO, recruiter, career planner, avionics chief, maintenance chief, administration chief and the senior enlisted billets of 1st Sergeant and Sergeant Major.
As a Marine, he has had the opportunity to serve Corps and Country in many “climes and places”, which include most of the 50 States, Europe, Mid East, Caribbean, Japan, Okinawa and Vietnam. Among the Sergeant Major’s awards and decorations are: The Meritorious Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation (2), Meritorious Unit Commendation (3), Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation, and various campaign and service awards.
At his retirement ceremony Sergeant Major Flynn said that he regretted leaving, but was honored and privileged to have been part of the Corps. “I was as proud of my Pfc. chevrons as I am of my sergeant major chevrons. I am very fortunate to have served Corps and country for 32 years.” At the time of his retirementhe was serving as the Brigade Sergeant Major of the 2D Marine Expeditionary Brigade, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic.
