Marie M. Isaily, age 89, of Chicago, passed away on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at Resurrection Hospital in Chicago. She was born on May 22, 1936, in Decorah, Iowa, to Herman and Bertha (VonDrasek) Johnson. The family later moved to Chicago, where Marie graduated from Waller High School.
On August 28, 1954, in Chicago, Marie married the love of her life, Walter K. Isaily. She began her career as a switchboard operator and later worked as an Operating Room Unit Secretary—first at Augustana Hospital and then at Grant Hospital—where she was known for her steady dedication, warm spirit, and the deep respect she earned from colleagues.
Marie was the ultimate homebody, happiest when surrounded by family. Christmas was her favorite holiday, and she found great joy in creating meaningful traditions, especially stuffing stockings for her grandchildren. She hosted countless grandchildren sleepovers, where their favorite game, “Evil Grandma,” became a treasured memory—her playful twist on Hide and Seek that filled her home with laughter.
Marie shared a lifelong bond with her best friend, Marianne. The two could often be found “bumming around” Chicago, enjoying their coffee, chatting for hours, and sharing secrets known only between best friends. A true coffee girl, Marie was often seen in her kitchen with a cup in hand, watching her beloved Chicago Cubs on her small 12-inch TV. Though her children teased her about not being a great cook, her chicken mole, baked hams, and canned fruit salad were beloved family staples.
Marie is survived by her four children: Mark A. (Rose Marie) Isaily of Chicago; Catherine (Robert) Shockey of Glendale Heights; and Michael and Derek Isaily of Chicago.
She was the proud grandmother of Jonathan (Gina) Centeno; Hilary (John) Frabbiele; Carrie (Brett) Psik; Elizabeth (Greg) Pociask; Alice Levins; Heather Shockey; Robert “Bob” (Katie) Shockey; Samantha (Scott) Lotz; Cory Shockey; Danielle Isaily; Nicole “Nikki” Isaily; Derek Isaily, Jr.; and Brianna Isaily.
She was also the loving great-grandmother of fifteen great-grandchildren.
Marie will be remembered for her warmth, humor, love of simple comforts, and the devotion she carried for her family and faith. Her legacy continues in the generations she cherished so deeply.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Gertrude Church on Saturday, March 28, 2026 at 10:00 A.M. The Church doors will be open at 9:15 A.M. for anyone who wants to visit prior to the start of Mass.
